The Best Free Resources for Learning a New Language
Language-learning apps get most of the attention, but a lot of serious language learning still happens through grammar reference books, dictionaries, and graded readers — and a meaningful number of solid ones are completely free, particularly for widely studied languages.
Reference grammars
Older, out-of-copyright grammar reference books (particularly for French, German, Spanish, Latin, and Ancient Greek) remain genuinely useful — grammar doesn't change the way vocabulary or pronunciation trends do, so a public-domain grammar from decades ago is often just as accurate as a new one, just less visually polished.
Graded readers
Reading material written for learners at a specific level — not native-speaker literature, not a phrasebook — is one of the most underused free resources. Simplified versions of public-domain classics exist for several major languages and bridge the gap between "textbook exercises" and "real literature" better than either extreme.
Dictionaries
Public-domain bilingual dictionaries exist for most major language pairs, and while modern dictionaries add newer vocabulary, a public-domain dictionary from the early-to-mid 20th century is still fully usable for the vast majority of everyday and literary vocabulary.
- •Search "[language] grammar reference" plus "open access" or "public domain" rather than general search — this filters out paid course platforms.
- •University language departments frequently publish free grammar guides and reading lists for their own courses, openly accessible even to non-students.
- •ANYFREEBOOK's Languages & Grammar category surfaces live results across open grammar references and bilingual texts.
Reading a public-domain novel in your target language, even slowly with a dictionary at hand, builds vocabulary retention better than isolated flashcard review — the context does real work that memorization alone doesn't.
