Free Children's Books and Picture Books Parents Actually Want

Most "free children's books" apps are free trials of a subscription. There is, separately, a real body of genuinely free children's literature — classic picture books old enough to be public domain, plus open-access early readers built specifically to be free and stay free.

Classic picture books now in the public domain

The Tale of Peter Rabbit

by Beatrix Potter

Fully public domain, illustrations included — one of the earliest and most enduring picture books, and a genuinely good one, not just a historically significant one.

The Story of Little Black Sambo

by Helen Bannerman

Historically significant and public domain, though worth reading the more recent, respectfully re-illustrated public-domain adaptations rather than the original artwork, which reflects its era in ways many parents will want to skip.

The Tale of the Nutcracker and the Mouse King

by E.T.A. Hoffmann

The original story behind The Nutcracker — public domain, longer than a typical picture book, and better suited to reading aloud in chapters to slightly older children.

Early readers and phonics-friendly books

Beyond public-domain classics, several nonprofits and open-education initiatives publish openly licensed early readers specifically designed for children learning to read — usually shorter, simpler vocabulary, and released under licenses that explicitly permit free redistribution rather than a copyright expiring naturally.

A note on illustrations

Text often enters the public domain well before its original illustrations do if they were created separately or later — always check that the specific scan or edition you're using includes public-domain artwork, not just public-domain text with copyrighted images bundled in by a later publisher.

Where to find these

ANYFREEBOOK's Children's Books category pulls picture books and early readers from Project Gutenberg, the Internet Archive's Children's Library, and Open Library, all searchable and readable directly without an app download or subscription trial.

💡

For read-aloud sessions, look specifically for scanned editions rather than text-only transcriptions — picture books lose most of their value without the original illustrations alongside the words.
