A Reading List of Free Classic Russian Literature
Russian literature's 19th-century golden age is almost entirely public domain now, and it's some of the most highly regarded fiction ever written — but the reputation for difficulty (long books, long names, philosophical density) puts a lot of readers off before they start. Here's a path through it that doesn't start with the hardest option.
Start here, not with Dostoevsky
The Death of Ivan Ilyich
by Leo Tolstoy
A novella, not a doorstop — reads in an afternoon and is a genuinely better introduction to Tolstoy's concerns than starting cold with War and Peace.
The Overcoat
by Nikolai Gogol
A short story often cited as foundational to all later Russian prose fiction — darkly funny, quick to read, and a useful preview of Gogol's sensibility before attempting a longer work.
The famous long ones — worth the time
Crime and Punishment
by Fyodor Dostoevsky
The most approachable of Dostoevsky's major novels — structured more like a psychological thriller than his later, more philosophically dense work.
Anna Karenina
by Leo Tolstoy
Long, but the plot moves faster than its reputation suggests. A more emotionally direct read than War and Peace, and a reasonable choice for a first full-length Tolstoy novel.
A note on translations
Translation choice matters more for Russian literature than for most languages — older public-domain English translations (many from the early 20th century) are freely available but can feel stiff compared to modern translations, which are usually still under copyright. The free versions are completely readable; just don't assume the prose style reflects the original Russian if it feels dated.
If a long Russian novel feels slow at first, that's often the translation and the unfamiliar naming conventions (patronymics, nicknames) rather than the writing itself — a short glossary of character names, kept nearby for the first fifty pages, solves most of the early confusion.
