Foundational texts
The Interpretation of Dreams
by Sigmund Freud (public domain translations)
Whatever your view of Freud's conclusions, this is a foundational text that shaped an entire field — worth reading directly rather than only through secondhand summary, if only to see what he actually argued versus what's commonly attributed to him.
The Principles of Psychology
by William James
Long, but James is a genuinely excellent prose stylist — this remains one of the most readable foundational psychology texts, still cited constantly in modern research.
Behaviorism and beyond
Early behaviorist texts (Watson, and later Skinner's foundational work once it enters the public domain) are worth reading directly if you've only encountered behaviorism as a textbook's brief historical footnote before moving on to cognitive psychology — the original arguments are more nuanced than the summary version.
Reading these critically
A lot of early psychology has been significantly revised or outright rejected by modern research — read these as intellectual history and a window into how the field developed, not as current best evidence. That context makes them more interesting, not less.
