Often called the first work of history in the Western tradition — full of digressions, gossip, and genuine storytelling rather than dry chronology, closer to a travelogue than a textbook.
First-hand accounts
Memoirs and first-hand accounts from historical figures are underused as history reading — they read naturally as narrative because they are narrative, written by someone who was actually there, and a substantial number from before the mid-20th century are now public domain.
