Chapter 10: Working with your lecturers and classmates

What lecturers actually do

Lecturers are not trying to catch you out. Most are doing three jobs at once: teaching, marking, and research/admin pressure. Their attention is scarce, so your approach decides whether you get it.

What gets a good response: a specific question, sent in good time, in an email that says who you are and which module. What does not: "Just checking in" with no question; a long apology for asking; messages at 11pm on a Sunday before a deadline.

How to ask a question well. One email, four lines:

Which module and which week or topic the question is about.

One sentence describing where you are stuck — "I cannot see why the author rejects the causal explanation on page 42".

Your attempt — even if it is wrong — so they can see your thinking.

One clear question — "Is the issue that the sample is unrepresentative, or that the measure is invalid?"

Office hours. Go if you can; if you cannot, email the same four lines. Prepare three questions before you go; you will usually get the first one answered.

Feedback. Read it before the next assignment. If a mark surprises you, ask with the criteria in mind: "I do not see where I met the criterion on analysis — can you point me to it?" Much better than "why did I get 58?"

The lecture. If you miss one, get the recording and the slides, then ask one question about it. Using a missed lecture as an excuse to skip the material is obvious to everyone.

Lecturers are not obstacles to be managed. They are the fastest route to the thing you do not yet understand.

Working with classmates

The people in your seminar are the ones who will help you in week eleven. This is logistics, not platitude. The student with the good notes is usually the one who will share them before an exam, and the one who understands the brief is usually the one who will check your draft.

Be the person who asks one concrete question. One good question changes the discussion for everyone. Ask it clearly, then let others talk.

Turn a study group into a structure, not a friendship. Groups work when they have a fixed time, a host, an agenda and an end time.

Help without rescuing. Sharing your notes and explaining the argument is good. Doing their work for them is not.

Find three kinds of people. One ahead of you in the reading. One at your level. One in a different discipline — where most good ideas come from.

Seminar and tutorial technique

Before: read for 30 minutes, write the argument in one sentence, prepare one question, and be able to say what you agree with and what you are unsure about.

During: take notes on the discussion, not the slides. Look for the moment the discussion turns — that is where the interesting thing is.

After: three lines. What was the argument? What did I contribute? What do I still not understand?

Seminar moment

What to do

Why

Nobody has spoken for two minutes

Ask your prepared question, addressed to the lecturer

You break the silence once and it becomes easier for everyone

You disagree

"I wonder if that holds, because X seems to assume Y"

States the disagreement without personalising it

You have no idea what is being discussed

"Could you say more about how X relates to Y?"

Clarification reads as engagement

You disagree with the reading

Bring the reading's own words: "On page 12 the author says ..."

Evidence beats opinion

How to ask for feedback without looking weak. The rule is specificity is strength. "Do you think this essay is good?" gets you nothing. "Does my second section do what the criterion on analysis asks, or does it need to link back to my thesis?" produces a usable answer in two minutes.

Managing group work

Group work fails on four things: unclear roles, late communication, unequal contribution, and no shared deadline.

Set roles in the first meeting. Writer, editor, researcher, coordinator. Rotate if the project runs longer than a month.

Use one shared document from day one. Not email attachments. One live document everyone can edit, with names on sections.

Set a meeting rhythm in week one. Same slot each week, 45 minutes, agenda circulated 24 hours ahead.

Make contributions visible. A shared task list with names against items. Social pressure does the work goodwill will not.

Write the handover note. If someone drops out, the work does not collapse with them.

Group work is not friendship and it is not friendship-testing. It is a small project with a deadline. Treat it like one.
